French Writing Samples
In this piece, I argue that there was an underlying goal motivating the student revolutions of 1968 in France, beyond what was proclaimed on posters and in battle cries. My argument was largely shaped by the chapter titled "Prendre la parole", in Michael Certeau's book, La prise de parole.
This essay discusses the stigmatization of female pleasure and how sex education in schools needs to be improved to include information about female anatomy in the context of sexual pleasure, and not just in the context of reproduction. It also touches on abortion as an act of personal care and the fight against the shame that many women feel about sex.
I compare the behavior of slave ship captains with prison guards from the 1971 social experiment, the Stanford Prison Experiment. This analysis allows for a psychological assessment of how and why men in both situations were able to behave in the horrifying manners they did, and it offers an acknowledgment of how similar events can and still do happen today.
This is an excerpt of a 19th police archive document that I transcribed and then translated. This document was addressed to the police commissioner and discussed the increasing spread of syphilis by unregistered prostitutes at the time and his advice for what should be done about the issue.
